The colourful illustration of Paul Weller stood amongst London’s iconic buildings. Surrounded by cranes of both types representing the song ‘The Cranes Are Back’ which touches on the idea that society might undergo a positive renewal.

The judging panel felt Katie’s witty images worked for product use, as well being broad enough for multiple licensing uses and works of art in their own right.” Victoria Bridgeman, CEO of Bridgeman Images.

It also considers how political leaders can realistically proceed.

How to Flourish - Psychologies Magazine

The quest for wellbeing/why flourishing is good for you

Martin Seligman the author of Authentic Happiness has a new book called Flourish.

He promotes the idea that psychology should not just be about solving problems, but creating better mental health in everyone. Since then, the rise of ‘positive psychology’ has been all but unstoppable, with Seligman's book its key text. Three things: positive emotion, engagement with the world and others, and a sense of meaning and purpose. He proposed ways of achieving this blessed state, and even set out a gold standard for measuring it: life satisfaction, the score between one and 10 that people give themselves for how satisfied they are with their lives. And so, the ‘science of happiness’, as it is often called, became more and more.

Three ways to Flourish

The gratitude visit: Write a letter to someone who has helped you in the distant past, a person you never got round to thanking. Keep it to 300 words, and be specific about how they made a difference. Then call them up and arrange to see them. Read the letter aloud to them, and then discuss the content. You will both feel happier.

Three blessings: At the end of every day, get into the habit of writing down three things that went well in your life and why. They don’t need to be earth-shattering, it could be, ‘My husband picked up ice cream from the store on the way home from work today.’ It will feel awkward at first but stick with it – chances are in six months’ time you will feel happier, and could be addicted to this exercise.

Identify your signature strengths: Log on to authentichappiness.com and take the signature-strengths test. Signature strengths include 24 qualities, for example, leadership, kindness and love of learning. Seligman suggests that once we know what our key strengths are, we should find ways of using them every day.

Editorial Illustration for the Guardian.

Deloitte Magazine

Digital Agency

Attempting to deal with reality of the evolving digital workplace by teaching workers more and more new skills is akin to running on a continuously accelerating treadmill: So many new skills will eventually be needed, and will need to be updated so often, that an organization risks being unable to keep up. Instead, as the workplace evolves, so must our digital agency: equipping ourselves with the attitudes and behaviors that enable us to navigate and be effective in a constantly changing digital environment. So, the main focus being that instead of just “knowing” or being familiar with tech, in all its guises, the truly Digital-ready worker needs to have the many layers of discernment/initiative/predilection, etc. to know when and how best to utilize it.

The concept uses the classic Rorschach test type of illustration; a comparison of having the agency to know when and how to use the tech and on the other, showing that the tech is just being “thrown” at the issue.

The block-balancing game has become a favourite metaphor, highlighting the complex and interconnected nature of the Brexit process. “You don’t know if you pull one brick out what will happen” Douglas Flint. Zeitgeist, Keeping Track

Like every mother, I’m keen to know what my family gets up to all day. Does my husband arrive at work on time? And did he really get delayed on the way home or did he leave it until the last minute to leave for home. And where does the nanny take our son during the day? Is he getting enough fresh air in the park? And do they visit the library often enough? Intrigued by the possibilities of new technology, I’ve decided to track my family for a week using GPS locators. To bring a bit of James Bond to urban domesticity. Overprotective? Moi?

Gaming

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the most addictive games of all are the cheesy “casual” games you can play on a mobile phone, call up in a web browser or download free online. These games lack the fancy 3-D graphics, elaborate physics models and epic soundtracks of modern console games. They generally have flimsy plots, clunky graphics and amazingly simple controls.

Health Care - University of Toronto

The bases of the illustration is about ‘flying the nest’ resulting in a conceptual image of a nest with children inside and teenagers walking out.

Council Dept

The feature is about councils gaining freedom in the way they spend the debt, however some councils have more than others. The metaphor is doves flying from a cage, weighted with different depts.

Immigration

Immigrants often bear the brunt of the blame for housing shortages. The article looks at new rules for landlords who now have to make checks that determine whether tenants from abroad have the Right to Rent in the UK.

The concept is one that shows a large line of people queuing at a ‘UK Border Control-style’ sign. The sign has two entrances: One which leads to housing (Approved). And one that leads to nowhere (Denied).

Otis Ferguson

Editorial lllustration for Clark University about Otis Ferguson, The man who panned ‘Oz’

“I think a claim can be made for Ferguson as the writer of the best and most subtly influential film criticism ever turned out in America.”

High praise for the Jazz Age writer with a rebellious streak Ferguson staked his claim to literary greatness with the New Republic, where he churned out film

reviews that entertained and enlightened many, and left others aghast. In his notorious pan of “The Wizard of Oz.”

His love of jazz resulted in finely honed critical pieces, which helped shape the public’s perceptions of this distinctly American art form. Ferguson’s life and career were tragically brief. He initially opposed the United States’ entry into World War II, but answered the call of duty following the Pearl Harbour attack. He was killed in 1943 when the ship he was aboard was bombed in the Bay of Salerno. The explosive hit the messroom, where he’d gone alone to have a cup of coffee.

They are going through a period of self-reinvention in an attempt to get their groove back, they need to adopt strategies to encourage organic growth at their portfolio companies.

Real Simple magazine NYC, sleep and its benefits on the body.

“Sleep is often the first thing we cut out when things get busy,” says Jessica Payne, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and director of the Sleep Stress and Memory Lab at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. “That’s because a lot of people think of it as an inert state, kind of like a laptop switching off. In fact, your mind and body are highly active with processes that are critical for your physical and mental health.”

The article looks at the important things your body and mind are accomplishing for you while you are sleeping—from problem solving to weight control--and expert tips for getting the greatest benefit from your shuteye. “If you make sleep a priority in your life, you are going to be more efficient at the million things you have to get done during the day,” says Shelby Harris, Psy.D., Director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

Valentines’ Day is on it’s way, and to celebrate Amelia’s Magazine ran an open brief for love themed artwork. The brief was to create art that would look great on the wall year round, and be inspired by all things amorous…

I love animals, who doesn’t? I decided they were a great way to convey the idea of love, affection and companionship. I think most people could relate to the imagery I have used and feel some emotions. Animals often feature in my illustrations because they are very symbolic, as they don’t change with time or technology. They will always stay the same, and so will their symbolic meanings.

Available as a limited edition original screen print in the shop.

Under The Sales Umbrella

Mary Rose Selman shares her sales experiences from running her own businesses, and helping other small business entrepreneurs increase their sales.

Under The Weather - People Management Magazine

Cover illustration for People Management about feeling ill in the work place.

Up, Up & Away

An illustration that can send many positive messages, escapism, reaching for the stars, achieving your dreams, making a great gift for others or yourself.

Available as a limited edition original screen print in the shop.

Riley

Commissioned screen print of Riley and his humans, they weren’t quite sure what they wanted but liked the idea of all three of them in the picture. So I went snooping through their instagrams and came up with this. All together but doing the things they love most. They also got a second illustration just of Riley in the forest.
